Here’s an idea I just came up with. I’ve got a couple of stories working right now, but this tale of the Duke brothers might be on deck after that. Consider this a teaser or a throwaway. If you like it, let me know.
Eli and Memphis Duke had been rivals since birth. Whether it was window seats, toys, or, eventually girls, they each had to get there first or be the last one standing if that failed.
Although today’s stakes were infinitely higher, the dynamic stayed the same. When the call went out for volunteers, they practically trampled each other in their eagerness to sign up first.
As the dust settled, the significance of the choice they’d just made hit them once more; it was too late to turn back now.
This wasn’t a contest for bragging rights; it was the beginning of the last push for mankind’s survival. All other attempts had failed miserably.
The Dukes knew nothing about this plan. No one did. The details released to the public were intentionally vague.
However, like the other volunteers, they knew what they needed to know. Without some kind of breakthrough they were all dead anyway, along with everyone they loved.
This way, they had a chance to be heroes or at least die on their own terms. That was enough for now.
Good story!!
