A Miraculous Anomaly-Superman and Lois Review
A few weeks ago my brother told me I should check out a new show on the CW called Superman and Lois.
I respect my brother’s opinions on lots of things (especially nerdy things like superheroes) but I was skeptical to say the least.
The show was debuting on the CW. This used to be the place to find AMAZING superhero tv shows (especially the first 2 seasons of Arrow and The Flash). However, once Supergirl came the network went woke and perverse and started producing disgusting deviant garbage that insulted the legacy of the superheroes they were ruining.
Also, the show cast Tyler Hoechlin as Superman. Prior to this show, Tyler became infamous for playing a wussy joke Superman who played second fiddle to the insufferable Supergirl.
I had a little bit of hope, though. The show was going to show Superman as a father raising sons with Lois. This sounded a lot like my favorite run of Superman comics a few years ago (read my old Wordpress blog about it here: https://greenwords2.wordpress.com/2017/07/10/why-you-and-your-family-need-to-read-superman/“
So in spite of my reservations I decided to give the show a shot.
I’ve never been happier to be proven wrong.
Superman and Lois is the best kind of outlier- a wholesome, exciting entertaining superhero show that honors the legacy of its characters while telling new, original stories that get better with each new episode.
I was hooked after the pilot and I’ve continued to be a huge fan. Despite being surrounded by filth and crap on an otherwise garbage network, this show shines episode after episode.
I don’t want to get into spoilers so I can’t talk about everything I love about this show but I wanted to highlight some standouts in an amazing ensemble cast.
Tyler Hoechlin shocked me. He does a great Superman and an even better Clark Kent, specifically Clark Kent as a father. As a superhero and a father he knows when to be firm, when to be sensitive, and when to stand and fight for his family.
Elizabeth Tulloch is an amazing Lois Lane. She has the trademark passion for the truth and disregard for her own safety in pursuit of important stories of the original character.
However, she balances this perfectly with being a great mother to her sons and a wife to Clark. The chemistry between her and Tyler is palpable and another big strength of this series.
Her character has something in common with all the amazing actors on this show- their characters feel like real, fleshed-out people, not generalizations or box checking.
Jordan Elsass and Alex Garfin play the two sons Jonathan and Jordan Kent. Lois and Jonathan are the foundation for the family. They both struggle and Jonathan in particular sometimes fails miserably but their characters form the strong base that Clark and Jordan work to protect. Jordan Elsass does an awesome job playing Jonathan.
In the initial promos for the show they made a big deal about Jordan Kent struggling with social anxiety disorder but MERCIFULLY this is quickly forgotten and never used to push narratives or turn him into a token victim.
Alex Garfin makes Jordan (not a character from the comics by the way) nuanced, relatable and innately likable. The sibling chemistry between Jonathan and Jordan is rock solid and another major plus about this show. The Kents are a real family and you want to root for them.
The show is further strengthened by standout performances from Wole Parks, Adam Rayner, Dylan Walsh and Inde Navarrette.
Bottom line? This is a highly enjoyable, wholesome worthwhile show. I would encourage everyone to give it a shot in spite of the garbage CW. Superman and Lois is a rare flower in the middle of a woke desert.
