The Night Turns Over
The night turns over like a bear
And crushes me awake
It brings me faults and fears
Without request.
I fight in vain to drown it out
Then give up the debate
I kick off sheets and hopes
Of further rest.
Reluctantly I turn to find
My orders for the night
Instead I find a mind
Quite unprepared.
Unhelpful echoes promise me that
Something isn’t right
Yet those that woke me
Are no longer there.
Imprisoned by my consciousness
I lay awake for hours
Until at last the night falls
Back in place.
The sweet caress of sleepiness
Allures me with its power
As fading fears at last
Give up the chase.
