Faslo walked into the already bustling heart of Gicha village. He carried a hanuk light stick in his right arm that he’d found on a hunt years ago.
He jumped up onto the steel fountain in the center of town and dragged the stick roughly across its surface. The stick sparked and burst into blazing light. At the moment of ignition, the milling kefi all stopped their motion and activity to stare at Faslo.
Faslo raised the stick into the air above him and began to speak,
“Cives1 of Gicha, I, Faslo Solly initiate the sacred rite of Groro Pas2 to find my lost brother, Grig. I require a skilled tracker, a brave warrior, an attentive healer, and a crafty collector. Know that if you accept this charge, you are bound to me until the successful completion of the Pas.
“All who are willing, find me at Solly house or meet me at this fountain before the sun sets this evening. I have spoken, and I await your answers.”
Faslo stepped down from the fountain, tossing the stick behind him as he walked away without looking back. The flaming stick arched through the air slowly, landing with a hiss in the deep waters of the fountain.
The crowd began to slowly walk away and blend into a shapeless mass once more. Two tall Kefi stayed by the fountain. One was muscular and imposing, while the other was smaller and leaner. Both Kefi moved with purpose and confidence.
Poldi Vargas (the larger of the two) and Collop Dunn remained behind, impassively watching Faslo walking away. Collop walked to the fountain, picked up the sodden light stick, and took a moment to examine it before casting it away. Poldi scratched his beard, pulled an enormous Khev3 from a snai-skin sheath on his back, and tested the blade before putting it back.
The two Kefi glanced in the direction of Faslo’s departure, and then back at each other. A subtle smile passed between the two of them, and then they began to silently walk towards the Solly house to speak to Faslo.
